Open Question:
Should my 14-month son get a flu shot?
Since we're doing some heavy traveling at the end of this year (domestic and international), should he get a flu shot (since flu season is coming up)?  I am asking because the flu shot may or may not work since it only protects you from one strain of flu...

It would be best if you discuss this with your pediatrician.

Personally, I would recommend all three of you get it since you will be traveling during flu season.  The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends influenza immunization for all children 6 months through 18 years of age, as well as household contacts of children younger than 5 years. See their influenza recommendation for 2008-2009: http://www.cispimmunize.org/ill/Flu/Influenza%20Recommendations.pdf

Forgot to add in my last reply that IF you do decide to get the flu shot, even though it is ok to get the shot with other vaccines, I would not recommend it.  I would just get it alone.  2 reasons: 1) being taking multiple vaccines can amplify the reactions and 2) if there's a reaction, doctor won't know which one he/she is reacting to.

My son had his first flu shot with 2 other immunizations when he was 15 months old, and ran a fever that set off his first febrile seizure (102F).  Since he had 3 vaccines, they could not identify which one(s) he is reacting to.  From then on, I've insisted that he only gets one vaccine at a time, even if that means I have to take him back every 4-6 weeks.
